OUR MISSION: The Grace and the Grime Spiritual Formation Retreat exists to create space to deepen our experience with God in an authentic, encouraging environment. In addition to the grounded and the graceful, we welcome those who are weary, wary or unsure, and we believe we’re all wildly worthy of love and grace.

    1. We are Christians who believe God’s interest in us is as wide and broad and high and deep as Love itself.
    2. We believe our highest calling is to love God and love all people as ourselves.
    3. We seek people to attend this retreat who believe things similarly and differently than we do; not to bolster our own theology or change yours, but because we value myriad perspectives, embrace inclusion, and believe we can all learn from each other.
    4. We have no finish line or destination in mind for this retreat — no conversion or convincing on the docket — believing instead that God moves and works in us all, and in fact is already at work. We will create the space and tools for listening well, and we are content to leave each person’s destination up to the Divine who loves us beyond measure.

Asealrock3t the Grace and the Grime Spiritual Formation Retreat, we offer:

  • A relaxing environment, where skilled cooks prepare your meals and pour your wine.
  • An encouraging community of people exploring the spiritual confluence of grace and grime.
  • Quality spiritual formation sessions by Heidi Hopkins, an accomplished spiritual director. (Psst… see Heidi’s bio below!)
  • Ample opportunities for discussion and laughter, naps and Zumba, movies and hikes, and activities for introverts and extroverts alike.
  • Quite possibly naked hot tubbing, questionable language, and stories with way, WAY too much personal information, because Beth Woolsey will be there and she’s not very socially appropriate.

Here’s what previous Grace in the Grime retreat participants have to say:

“In our busy, “doing” society, it is refreshing to be reminded that God connects and speaks in quiet and stillness.”

Truly everything about the retreat was shocking in how incredible it was. Location, people, food, teaching, fellowship, the balance of teaching and free time, the love and sincerity of everyone there. I would go again in a second and recommend it to anyone.”

“Spending time in a beautiful setting with other spiritual seekers is just about the best thing you can do for your soul. I look forward to spending some time practicing what I have learned this past weekend, continuing some reading and learning and then hope to return to another retreat to help it all sink deeper into my being.”

Balm for the soul. A refuge from an us vs them mentality…”

“This retreat fed my soul and made a path for a greater level of joy that has been missing from my life to return! I will be use the tools we learned to continue pursuing the truths we discussed. I also made new friends that will be with me on this journey for a long time to come.”

GROUP SPIRITUAL FORMATION SESSIONS: Spiritual formation, simply put, is a process: we try out some intentional practices that allow our connection with God to deepen. We begin to see that we are creatures steeped in God’s love, that we are already saturated with Love, just as we are. Transformation is less about becoming something different and more about simply settling into that Love. Heidi Hopkins (see her bio below) will lead group sessions using her background and training to offer a bit of perspective, invite us into some spiritual practices, and create the space and silence necessary for us to encounter God in our own way.

OPTIONAL INDIVIDUAL SPIRITUAL DIRECTION SESSION: If you choose, you may sign up for a one-on-one spiritual direction session with Heidi for an additional $50. Thomas Merton wrote, “Spiritual direction is a way of leading us to see and obey the real Director — the Holy Spirit hidden in the depths of our soul.” As she listens to you, Heidi’s aim will be to help you hear what is resonating in the ground of your being–that place inside where we discover that our depths and God’s depths are the same depth. Most of the time we discover that we are more in the light than we had thought, and that the places of struggle and tension are actually pregnant with spiritual possibilities and hope. In spiritual direction you will have a chance to wonder about what invitation is being offered to you through the details of your life.sealrock9

IMG_4730SPIRITUAL FORMATION LEADER: Heidi Hopkins  is fascinated by the mystery of God’s presence with us in our humanity. Heidi began her work as a campus minister with InterVarsity Christian fellowship at Stanford University after graduating with a BA in Human Biology. She began to see the sacredness and variety of each individual’s journey, and left InterVarsity in search of a more fluid framework for walking alongside others spiritually. This led her to a 2 year spiritual direction course at the Monastery of the Risen Christ in San Luis Obispo. Here she became convinced that the map of the spiritual journey has no boundaries, and God’s presence with us on that journey has no limits.  Heidi has since completed 180 hours of training in the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, and has worked weekly with children ages 3-9 for the past 10 years. Using scripture, Montessori-based materials, and a lot of silence and freedom, it has been a delight for her to create space for children to encounter God in their own way.  Currently, Heidi is training with Richard Rohr in the Living School for Action and Contemplation. This two year program moves beyond our western post-enlightenment version of Christianity to help us see and practice the transformation of consciousness Jesus was after. Heidi notes, “As a spiritual director, I operate from a spacious place within the Christian tradition and am open to people of any faith, no faith, or disillusioned faith.”

beth-equals-boss-099SESSION CONTRIBUTOR, RETREAT COORDINATOR: Beth Woolseyis the writer and humorist behind the Five Kids Is A Lot of Kids blog where she writes frequently about pee and Jesus, but not usually at the same time. She’s been described by readers as “optimistic, authentic, poignant and laugh-out-loud funny, [capturing] the mom experience with all its pathos and humor,” and she was named one of’s Top Five Moms Who Will Make You Laugh Out Loud. Beth’s true passion lies in creating authentic communities full of imperfect people. She loves wild truths and unreasonable grace, and she’s really far too loud for polite society.

petersonFOOD, WINE, ACTIVITIES AND HOSPITALITY: Polly and Maggie Peterson are the mother/daughter duo in charge of all things hospitality! Their mission is great food, fabulous wine and warm welcomes for the women coming to this retreat. Polly is an English professor and playwright from Newberg, Oregon. Polly believes every person is valuable and has something important to say; as such, she takes a holistic approach to writing, caring as much about what the writer wants to say as how she says it. Maggie is a friendly and energetic woman from Seattle, Washington who recently gMaggieraduated college with a Bachelor of Arts in French and Francophone Studies. She loves good food, being outside, getting rowdy and investing in people in her community. She has no idea what she wants to do in the near future job-wise, so enjoy her youthful presence and don’t be intimidated by her “nudity-builds-community” approach to bonding.
