How to Sign “I Wuhve You”

“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.”
Martin Luther King, Jr.

Today in America, we celebrate the life and light of Martin Luther King, Jr.

There are a lot of reasons to love Dr. King. As I gaze into the different colors and shapes of my children’s eyes, I realize that my five reasons are very, very personal. They are, in fact, my heart. The fact that Greg and I have been gifted with the ability to raise our Asian, Latino and Caucasian children together as a family makes me realize both how far we’ve come… and how far we have to go. Our country is not done realizing Dr. King’s dream, but, as a brilliant man once said,

“Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.”
Martin Luther King, Jr.

It’s hard for me to swallow this crazy, full life of mine in bite-sized pieces, and I approach national and global challenges the same way… with equal parts gusto and frustration. But it’s important to me to remember sometimes that life is a series of steps. It’s my responsibility to get on the stairs.

And, in the end…

“I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear.”
Martin Luther King, Jr.

……….

I’m away this weekend with my littlest three kiddos in Alaska. And while I’m away, I’m sharing tidbits that I originally posted only on the Five Kids Facebook page.

In Dr. King’s honor, I leave you today with this tidbit about love:

How to Sign “I Wuhve You”

These are directions from my preschooler on how to say “I wuhve you” in sign language [with my comments in brackets]:

OK. Ready?

OK. This is what to do.

Point at you. And then you put one pointer upside down and cup your other one right side up around it. And then the other pointer right side up and the other pointer down. [I know. That’s a lot of pointer fingers, but I double checked these directions, and Cael assures me they’re right.] Then point at the other guy REALLY HARD; that’s the one you wuhve.

To say “I wuhve you back,” you point at you, and then you make two fingers. That means, “Me, too.”

[P.S. Anyone have some extra pointer fingers I can borrow? I need to tell this kid I wuhve him REALLY HARD.]
